Our Story

Sharing Hope. Serving Communities. Transforming Lives.

In 1979, with the help of the Billy Graham Ministry, The Encounter began as a prison ministry with a simple calling: carry the Good News of Jesus Christ onto Florida's prison yards. Forty-seven years later, that calling hasn't changed, but the ways we answer it have grown.

The yard crusades opened the door. In 2007 we began meeting men and women at the gate on release day with clothing, shelter and food. In 2010 we started mentoring and teaching inside Marion and Tomoka Correctional Institutions. In 2019 we put the Florida GPS-Book into more than 10,000 hands. It is a guide to reentry resources in all 67 counties.

Today our commercial kitchen feeds 2,000 meals monthly to those in our community suffering from food insecurity, including the homeless, through freeze-dried food production.

Now we are looking to build the Encounter Community Restoration Campus: three acres where a Market Place, housing, workforce training and faith come together in one place. No one reentering society or facing homelessness, and no family in need, should have to begin that journey alone.

Everything we do flows from the two greatest commandments and the Great Commission.

LOVE GOD • LOVE PEOPLE • MAKE DISCIPLES

Our Mission

Our mission is to sow God's Word throughout our community, including among the incarcerated and homeless, and to help restore those affected by crime and incarceration. It is founded on the biblical conviction that all people are created in God's image and that no life is beyond God's reach. (Genesis 1:27)

Restoration. Our restorative approach recognizes the God-given dignity and potential of every person, so that through Christ individual lives can be restored and made to flourish.

Reentry. Through a Christian approach to reentry, those who once broke the law are transformed and mobilized to serve their neighbors, and the cycle of crime is replaced by a transformed life.

Statement of Faith

  • We believe the Holy Bible to be the only infallible, authoritative Word of God.
  • We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
  • We believe in the Deity of Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, His vicarious and atoning death, His resurrection and His intercession for all believers.
  • We believe that for the salvation of the lost and sinful, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential.
  • We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life.
  • We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost: they that are saved unto the resurrection of life, and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.
  • We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ, as a faith ministry supported by contributions from our community.
  • We believe in living purposefully within the Great Commandment and the Great Commission given by Jesus.

About Us

Who we are and what we believe

The Encounter – Sharing Hope, Serving Communities, Transforming Lives
Our Story

The Encounter is a non-profit 501(c)(3) that began in 1979 as a prison ministry, founded with the assistance of the Billy Graham Ministry. For over four decades, our mission has been clear: proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ and bring hope to the incarcerated, the marginalized, and the hurting. What started as prison yard crusades has grown into a multi-faceted ministry meeting both spiritual and physical needs across Florida and beyond through the two greatest Commandments and Jesus’ Great commission.

LOVE GOD – LOVE MAN – MAKE DISCIPLE’S

Our mission is to sow God’s Word throughout our community, including among the incarcerated and homeless.

Our mission is to help restore those affected by crime and incarceration. It is founded on the biblical conviction that all people are created in God’s image and that no life is beyond God’s reach – even those behind bars or living on the streets of our community.

Genesis 1:27

Restoration

Our genuine restorative approach to prisoners, former prisoners, and all those affected by crime and incarceration identifies the God-given dignity and potential of every person through Christ where individual lives can be restored and made to flourish.

Reentry

As Christians we believe that Jesus—Himself brought to trial, executed, buried, and brought to life again—offers hope, healing, and a new purpose for every life. Even the most broken people and situations can be made whole again. Through a Christian approach to reentry, an amazing awakening to new hope and life’s purpose is revealed. Those who once broke the law are transformed and mobilized to serve their neighbors, and the cycle of crime is replaced by a transformed life.
